ABOUT Akane Hououji / 01—0601First appearance and background
Akane Hououji appears in “Familia,” chapter 1 of The Café Terrace and Its Goddesses, published in Weekly Shonen Magazine’s 2021 issue 12 on February 17, 2021. She is the short-haired member of the five café employees greeting customers in the opening spread. They live at the seaside café Familia. After its owner dies, her grandson Hayato Kasukabe returns intending to demolish the building, threatening their shared home.
02Personality and appeal
Akane often seems relaxed and difficult to read, yet she takes the things she values seriously. At Familia, she excels at brewing coffee and treasures the taste of the former owner’s cups. Away from work, she writes lyrics and music and sings in a girls’ band. Coffee and music give that cool exterior a practical foundation: she has skills to practice and something of her own to express.
03Story journey
Story spoilers: anime episode 7, “My Year,” brings the possibility of Akane leaving Familia into focus. Noticing her troubled mood, Hayato asks whether she plans to quit, then proposes a “last date” to learn his grandmother’s coffee-making method from her. Akane struggles to speak when reminded that they are not actually related. Episode 8’s official synopsis confirms that Hayato persuades her mother, preserving their living arrangement for the time being.
04Relationships
Familia runs on complementary talents. Akane brings her coffee skills, Shiragiku handles cooking, Riho specializes in looking after customers, and Ouka designs uniforms and decorates the café. Their different contributions make the shared workplace function. The late owner Sachiko remains a personal link for Akane through the coffee she loved. Teaching Hayato that method also turns an everyday skill into a memory connecting the café’s two generations.
05Versions and visual identity
Akane originates in the manga that began in 2021. Asami Seto voices her in the television adaptation, whose first-season character introduction describes her as 19. The early café design combines a side-swept blonde bob and blue eyes with a blue-and-white striped dress, white apron, frilled headpiece, dark neck bow, tights and closed shoes. The artwork on this page is AI-generated unofficial fan art based on that café uniform.
06Fan interpretations
Akane has a documented reader-poll success: Kodansha’s March 20, 2023 announcement names her the winner of Weekly Shonen Magazine’s fourth heroine popularity poll. Volume 10’s special edition followed with an Akane-focused booklet. One rewarding fan reading pairs her coffee-making with her songwriting: one preserves a taste she treasures, while the other gives her a voice of her own. Both make the dedication behind her cool manner tangible.
