Makoto leads Mamoru Hosoda’s 2006 Madhouse film, released in Japan on July 15 and voiced in Japanese by Riisa Naka. The film develops a new story from Yasutaka Tsutsui’s premise; Makoto is not the novel’s heroine Kazuko Yoshiyama.
Athletic and impulsive, Makoto is much less confident about romance than about a game of catch. Her early leaps fix lateness, awkward moments and short karaoke sessions: the temptation is simply to postpone anything uncomfortable.
A bicycle-brake accident reveals her ability to leap back in time. Fixing her own troubles can transfer harm to someone else, while a number on her arm warns that the power is finite. The later story asks what she will do when another reset is no longer available.
Chiaki Mamiya and Kōsuke Tsuda are her close friends and baseball partners. Chiaki’s confession unsettles the trio’s familiar balance. Kazuko Yoshiyama is Makoto’s aunt and confidante, while Miyuki Konno is her younger sister, not another name for Kazuko.
Cropped hair, a white school blouse and forceful running silhouettes identify the 2006 Makoto. The original novel and the 1983 and 2010 live-action films follow different protagonists or continuities; this page stays with the animated film.
Fan reading: repeated baseball games and journeys home embody the ordinary summer Makoto wants to preserve. The final promise can suggest choosing a future rather than hiding in repetition, but an adult reunion is not shown and should not be presented as confirmed.
