Mitsumi Iwakura is the protagonist of Misaki Takamatsu’s manga Skip and Loafer, appearing in its opening installment in 2018. She leaves a sparsely populated town in Ishikawa for Tokyo, enters Tsubame West High with top entrance results, and lives with her relative Nao. She hopes to become a government official who can help her hometown. Mild opening spoilers: her carefully planned first day immediately unravels when she takes the wrong train and gets lost, leading to her meeting with fellow student Sousuke Shima.
Mild early-story spoilers: Mitsumi applies herself intensely, but preparation does not make every situation easy. Her carefully prepared classroom joke falls flat, and her lack of athletic skill prompts her to practise volleyball with the experienced Mika. She readily admits what she cannot do and asks for help. That openness can ease another person’s worries, yet it can also miss what they are struggling with. Takamatsu describes her as a girl who makes mistakes and keeps learning about other people.
Mild spoilers for anime season 1 and manga volume 7: Mitsumi becomes student-council secretary in July, then discovers that added responsibilities do not create more time. While juggling council duties and preparations for her class play, she oversleeps and misses the start of a script discussion. A summer visit home helps her recharge with family and old friends. By volume 7, entering her second year brings new classes and younger students. Her progress involves recognising her limits and sustaining friendships through change.
Mild relationship spoilers: Shima helps Mitsumi on entrance-ceremony day and again after her awkward classroom introduction; her wholehearted approach gradually affects this classmate who often hides his feelings. Yuzuki exchanges contact details with her early on, while a shared interest in the student council brings Makoto closer. Mika initially overlooks her but becomes involved through experiences such as volleyball practice. At home, Mitsumi has Nao. These friendships and family ties give her life several centres of support, beyond her feelings for Shima.
Mitsumi’s first-season anime design is simple and recognisable: a short dark-brown bob, separated bangs, small dark eyes, and a light-blue blazer and pleated skirt with a white shirt and coral-red tie. Dark socks and brown loafers complete the everyday school uniform. Her expressions carry much of the design’s personality. Her source is the manga; P.A.WORKS’ television adaptation began on April 4, 2023, with Tomoyo Kurosawa voicing her. An August 2026 announcement schedules season 2 for April 2027. Page illustrations are unofficial AI-generated fan art based on the anime design.
Creative background and our original fan interpretation: in a May 2026 interview, Takamatsu traced the leads’ initial inspiration to Ishida Mitsunari and Shima Sakon in Ryotaro Shiba’s Sekigahara, explaining that Mitsumi’s name came from Mitsunari. Their personalities changed substantially during development. Our reading is that Mitsumi keeps learning how intelligence and consideration can work together: plans get her moving, while other people’s feelings reshape her next step. This is an original interpretation, rather than an identification with the historical figure or a claim of fan consensus.
