Only Yesterday

Isao Takahata’s 1991 Only Yesterday adapts the manga by Hotaru Okamoto and Yuko Tone. A Yamagata visit brings 27-year-old Taeko’s ten-year-old memories into the present through safflower harvesting, family incidents and conversation. Beyond nostalgia or country romance, it asks how an adult woman recognizes her own wishes. Film and manga contexts, and adult and childhood scenes, are kept distinct.
