ABOUT Ruby Hoshino / 01—06

01First appearance and background

Ruby Hoshino’s manga appearance dates to 2020 in Oshi no Ko, written by Aka Akasaka and illustrated by Mengo Yokoyari. She is idol Ai’s daughter and Aqua’s twin sister. In the high-school part of the story, she attends Yoto High School’s performing arts program. Her mother’s stage connects a cherished childhood memory with the future she wants for herself.

02Personality and appeal

[Early-story spoilers] Ruby’s bright manner does not mean she has never been afraid. As a child, she struggles with dancing, then works through that fear by practicing with Ai. When she wants to start an idol group, she approaches Kana herself. Her energy reaches toward other people: she voices a wish, then looks for someone who can take the next step with her.

03Story journey

[Anime season-one spoilers] After Ai’s death, Ruby still pursues an idol career, while Aqua’s interference closes off opportunities. In high school she invites Kana Arima to join her, and the new B-Komachi takes shape with Kana and MEM-cho. Episode 11 brings the group onto the stage. Although many spectators have come for MEM-cho, Ruby draws their attention with a smile that recalls Ai.

04Relationships

[Early relationship spoilers] Ai is both Ruby’s mother and her idol. Aqua shares her family history, but enters entertainment with a very different aim. Kana becomes a groupmate as well as her school senior, while MEM-cho joins with an idol dream of her own. Ruby’s welcome helps turn B-Komachi into a shared undertaking, giving her ambition room to meet other people’s hopes.

05Versions and visual identity

The selected design is Ruby’s first-year high-school uniform from anime season one. Her long golden-blonde hair has pink inner sections and a tied section on her left; her pink-red eyes carry a white star only in the left eye. A navy jacket with gold trim, white shirt, black vest, pink bow, gray pleated skirt, white knee socks and dark loafers complete the look. This teenage school design differs from her childhood appearance. This page’s images are AI-generated fan art based on the anime design.

06Fan interpretations

[Fan interpretation] Ruby’s stage can be read as a turn from watching an idol to being seen by an audience. She once looked up to Ai; now she faces spectators herself and shares the light with her groupmates. From this angle, her smile matters for more than its resemblance to her mother’s. It marks a girl beginning to answer admiration with actions of her own.
