ABOUT Eiko Tsukimi / 01—06

01First appearance and background

Eiko first appears in chapter 1 of the manga by writer Yuto Yotsuba and artist Ryo Ogawa, published on Kodansha’s Comic DAYS on December 31, 2019. Both her debut and the work’s origin therefore belong to 2019. She works at Shibuya’s BB Lounge while trying to establish herself as a singer. Kongming arrives in a world he does not understand just as failed auditions and disappointing performances have shaken her confidence. Their starting problems give the partnership its shape: he needs a new purpose, while she needs a way to keep pursuing music.

02Personality and appeal

Eiko’s appeal includes her willingness to admit that she has not found every answer. Mild spoilers for anime episodes 7–8: while preparing for the 100,000-likes challenge, she meets the street musician Nanami and begins confronting the problem of what makes her own singing distinctive. Manga volume 4 likewise connects her recording slump with busking and learning through a new friendship. Having a strategist does not instantly make her a finished artist. Kongming can arrange an opportunity; Eiko still has to work out what she wants her performance to communicate.

03Story journey

Spoilers for anime episodes 3 and 11–12: her move from club shows to an outdoor festival first brings a badly placed stage and an audience drawn toward JET JACKET. Later, she competes for 100,000 likes to earn a place at Summer Sonia, facing AZALEA, the band Nanami belongs to. In episode 12, KABE’s rap provokes a hostile audience, leaving Eiko’s song to confront that atmosphere. The arc ultimately leads to a Summer Sonia qualification. Its recurring challenge is more personal than the counter on a screen: once she has people’s attention, what will make them listen?

04Relationships

Kongming plans opportunities as her strategist, while owner Kobayashi gives her a base at BB Lounge and understands her commitment to music. KABE brings rap into the team’s performances. Nanami is a close friend beyond their shared busking, and someone whose presence makes Eiko reconsider why she sings. Manga volume 7 spoilers: at Kyoto’s Five-District Festival, Eiko represents the under-resourced Kiyamachi Shopping District and wants to deliver her new song, “Flower Crown,” to her mother. Those relationships connect professional collaboration, everyday companionship and family communication, giving her ambition more than a larger stage as its destination.

05Versions and visual identity

The manga began in 2019 and the TV anime followed in 2022. The 2024 film Road to Summer Sonia is an anime compilation with additional performance footage. The selected everyday TV design has golden-blonde twin braids, short bangs under a black baseball cap, and blue eyes with pale aqua-green highlights. A loose navy, yellow-green and pink jacket sits over a pale T-shirt, black cuffed shorts and green-and-white sneakers. This practical streetwear is one recurring look, rather than a uniform for every performance. The 2023 television drama and 2025 live-action film have their own performers and styling. Page illustrations are unofficial AI-generated fan art based on the anime design.

06Fan interpretations

A production detail: the TV anime divides Eiko’s spoken performance and singing between Kaede Hondo and 96Neko, while Akari Kito plays her in Kodansha’s 2020 chapter-one voicecomic. The same character can therefore sound different across media. Fan interpretation: her growth can be read as learning whom she is singing to. Nanami on the street, her mother at a festival and a skeptical crowd each ask something different of her voice. This is a reading of the relationships, not an official psychological profile.
