ABOUT Sagiri Yamada Asaemon / 01—06

01First appearance and background

Sagiri appears in the first chapter of Yuji Kaku’s Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku, published on Shonen Jump+ on January 22, 2018. Shueisha’s public volume-one preview shows her identifying herself by name, establishing 2018 as her own manga debut year. In the late-Edo setting, she is a daughter of the executioner Yamada family and holds the twelfth rank in its Tameshi-itto-ryu school. Crunchyroll’s character guide gives her age as seventeen. She is assigned to monitor Gabimaru on the expedition to find an elixir of immortality.

02Personality and appeal

Sagiri’s difficulty is not simply learning how to swing a sword: she cannot treat taking a life as an empty gesture. Her composed questioning of a prisoner sits beside real uncertainty about her profession. In the official author interview, Kaku explains that she and Gabimaru carry values closer to contemporary readers than their historical surroundings. For Sagiri, that tension makes inherited rules personal. Her seriousness, stubbornness and reluctance to judge casually give her swordsmanship an inward dimension, as she searches for a path she can accept.

03Story journey

Spoilers for anime season one, episodes 4–6: the island’s creatures put Sagiri and Gabimaru in danger, and Yuzuriha’s offer of help opens the way to an uneasy alliance. After poison incapacitates Sagiri, her senior Genji presses her to leave because she is a woman. The confrontation with Rokurota then forces her to reconsider her path under immediate pressure. Episode six’s official synopsis emphasizes her sword working with Gabimaru’s techniques. This early turning point joins survival, professional duty and self-determination in the same encounter.

04Relationships

Mild spoilers for later season-one episodes: Sagiri and Gabimaru begin as monitor and condemned prisoner, but the island increasingly demands cooperation between them. His wish to return to his wife remains a central motive, giving their developing partnership a concrete goal. Yuzuriha and her monitor Senta bring another pair into Sagiri’s circle. While searching for Gabimaru, the group enters Horai, where the Tensen await. As companions fall, Sagiri wishes for everyone to return together, extending her concern beyond the one prisoner assigned to her.

05Versions and visual identity

The 2018 manga, 2023 first anime season and 2026 second season are distinct publication stages. Official anime art gives Sagiri very dark brown hair in a high ponytail, long sidelocks and amber-brown eyes. The full-body visual released in September 2025 shows a closed white kimono, ankle-length white pleated lower layers, red waist pieces and trailing ties, tabi socks, sandals and a sheathed sword. Her ponytail and ribbons extend the silhouette into the surrounding space. Yumiri Hanamori voices her, while a serious, sometimes uncertain expression remains another recognizable part of her presentation. Page illustrations are unofficial AI-generated fan art based on the anime design.

06Fan interpretations

Fan interpretation: Sagiri can be read as someone learning to live with contradiction. An executioner’s blade suggests a definite judgment, while her inner life repeatedly encounters questions that resist a simple split: duty and compassion, expectations and personal wishes, monitoring and cooperation. From this angle, the Middle Way is a willingness to choose while acknowledging competing pressures. Her orderly white silhouette and freely trailing red ties offer a visual parallel between discipline and motion. This is an editorial reading, rather than an exclusive statement of the author’s intent.
