ABOUT Yae Amagami / 01—06

01First appearance and background

Yae appears in Marcey Naito’s December 2020 one-shot of Tying the Knot with an Amagami Sister, before serialization began on April 21, 2021. At Kyoto’s Amagami Shrine, medical-school hopeful Uryu Kamihate moves in with her and her two younger sisters. The anime presents Yae as a 20-year-old university student.

02Personality and appeal

She wants to be the dependable older sister, yet can turn tearfully to youngest sister Asahi when Uryu and Yuna are absent. Artistic and martial abilities add another side to that apparent helplessness. Naito has explained that he conceived Yae’s calm but childish temperament in contrast with the more stubborn Yuna.

03Story journey

Anime story spoilers: after the shrine festival, Yae and her sisters visit their shrine-maiden mentor at Tsukigami Shrine in Arashiyama to discuss handling more visitors. Episode 13 turns toward her personal history: Uryu travels into the past, recognizes the child Reiko Ichijoji as young Yae, and learns that complicated family relationships trouble her.

04Relationships

Yuna takes the sisters and shrine seriously, while Asahi enjoys teasing Uryu; life with them often unsettles Yae’s big-sister composure. Makoto Takeda is her childhood best friend, studying medicine at Kyoto University. Mild spoilers: in episode 11, the younger sisters ask Uryu to accompany Yae to a university-club gathering because they worry about her vulnerability when drinking.

05Versions and visual identity

This page follows her everyday shrine-maiden design in the 2024–25 TV anime: long charcoal-black hair with dark teal highlights, green eyes, and a red cord laced along her right temple with hanging loops and tassels. A white wide-sleeved top and red inner collar pair with a front waist bow, long red hakama, white tabi and pale sandals. Page illustrations are unofficial AI-generated fan art based on this anime design.

06Fan interpretations

Original fan interpretation: Yae’s older-sister appeal comes partly from care flowing both ways. She can put others at ease and still need her younger sisters to look out for her. The composed shrine outfit beside an unhurried, sometimes uncertain expression suggests someone whose closeness to family includes accepting care herself.
