ABOUT Eiko Hozuki / 01—06

01First appearance and background

Eiko is already named and pictured in the Dark Gathering one-shot published in Jump SQ.RISE 2018 SPRING. The fourth story-page image in Shueisha’s public preview identifies her directly, establishing her own manga debut in 2018. The ongoing monthly series followed in 2019. In the serialized story, she is a first-year Reio University student, Yayoi’s cousin and Keitaro’s childhood friend. An earlier supernatural incident left Eiko and Keitaro with the same curse. The prototype is evidence of her publication history; its reunion scene and clothing belong to that early version, rather than automatically carrying over into the continuing story.

02Personality and appeal

Mild early-story spoilers: Eiko encourages Keitaro to rejoin society, yet she also enjoys the occult and regularly accompanies Yayoi to haunted places. Those interests give her companionship a tension of its own. University offers a fresh start, while her curiosity keeps approaching the world that frightens him. Official anime publicity also singles out her unsettling expressions. Her appeal lies partly in how an approachable smile can become difficult to read. She brings the familiarity of a childhood friend into a horror story, but that familiarity does not make every moment around her reassuring.

03Story journey

Spoilers for manga volumes 2 and 10 and anime episode 6: a university class on urban legends becomes a real supernatural emergency when a cursed recording is played. A camping break proves no safer. After learning Eiko’s feelings, Keitaro reaches a decision, but an outside influence draws her toward a bridge, leaving him and Yayoi to help her. Manga volume 10 reverses the immediate danger: the spirit at A Dam has Keitaro under its influence, and Eiko and Yayoi are among those on whom his rescue depends. Across these incidents, she moves between needing support and helping a companion in danger.

04Relationships

Spoilers from manga volume 3 onward: Eiko and Keitaro become a couple, a change explicitly confirmed in the volume 3 synopsis. Their shared curse keeps the romance connected to the search for a way out of supernatural danger. Yayoi is Eiko’s cousin and lives with her family; her search for her mother’s stolen spirit gives their expeditions another purpose. Later, the threat facing Ai Kamiyo draws the group into a larger effort. Family, romance and practical cooperation overlap within this small team, so an outing can carry several personal stakes at once.

05Versions and visual identity

The 2018 one-shot shows Eiko in a soft hat, scarf, poncho-like top and boots. Her official 2023 anime character art presents a different everyday look: long, wavy warm-brown hair, red-brown eyes, a pale-yellow sweater and charcoal high-waisted shorts with two rectangular side buckles. Muted pink gloves, reddish-brown tights and gray-and-black ankle boots complete it. The pale knit and darker lower half give her long hair a clear silhouette. Kana Hanazawa voices her in the anime. This is one identifiable adaptation outfit, distinct from the prototype’s hat and layered outerwear. Page illustrations are unofficial AI-generated fan art based on the anime design.

06Fan interpretations

Fan interpretation: Eiko can be read as a character who makes familiarity feel uncertain. She encourages Keitaro to return to ordinary life while remaining curious about what lies beyond it. With both impulses present, an invitation or a smile can carry suspense. Her pale knitwear and childhood-friend role might suggest an easy campus romance in another genre; here they acquire a different effect. Comparing the prototype’s layered clothing with the anime’s cleaner silhouette is also rewarding: the visual presentation changes, while the childhood connection and old incident remain useful starting points. This is an editorial reading, not an official statement of a single intended theme.
