ABOUT Misato Katsuragi / 01—0601First appearance and background
Misato Katsuragi appears in the 1995 Neon Genesis Evangelion television anime as a NERV operations commander. The television series differs from the Rebuild films; this profile is based on the relationships depicted in the television series.
02Personality and appeal
She is decisive at work, but her private life often appears disorganized, and she cannot always manage her emotions well. Being an adult does not mean she has resolved every problem; this contrast is part of her character.
03Story journey
She commands EVA-related operations and also looks after the daily lives of Shinji Ikari and the other pilots. Military missions and the responsibility to protect children do not always align, and the work uses this tension to portray her circumstances and choices.
04Relationships
Shinji Ikari lives with her, and Asuka also joins this household; Ritsuko Akagi is a colleague she knows well, and she has a complicated romantic history with Ryoji Kaji. She is not the pilots’ biological mother.
05Versions and visual identity
Her long purple hair, red jacket, and cross pendant are distinguishing features. Scenes of serious command, fatigue, awkwardness, and sincere encouragement can show both sides of her work and personal life.
06Fan interpretations
Fan interpretation: Misato often tries to give the children a place where they can live, while also leading them into missions. Examining this contradiction gets closer to the work’s concerns than simply judging whether she is a perfect guardian.
