ABOUT Sumireko Ogawa / 01—0601First appearance and background
Sumireko Ogawa appears in the opening chapter of Nujima’s Mysterious Disappearances, publicly posted by Shogakukan on October 18, 2019. She writes fiction while working in a bookstore, still searching for a breakthrough. The 2024 anime opens around her 28th birthday. Her manga debut, the first collected volume in 2020 and the anime premiere are separate milestones.
02Personality and appeal
Her fascination with the occult makes an unfamiliar book hard to ignore. In the opening manga chapter, she and Ren Adashino trade teasing remarks across a quiet bookstore counter. She won a newcomer’s fiction prize at fifteen, but lasting success did not follow. That gap between an early achievement and an uncertain adult career gives her wish for another beginning a tangible context.
03Story journey
Spoilers for episodes 1–4 of the 2024 anime: the shop manager gives her a book of unknown origin for her birthday. Reading it draws her into a supernatural rejuvenation. She later enters a girls’ school as a friend of Ren’s younger sister to investigate disturbances, while still spending her days off writing. Her transformed younger appearances belong to the plot; this profile selects her original adult design.
04Relationships
Ren Adashino is both her coworker and her partner in investigating strange events. Their easy counter-side banter gradually leads into secrets he keeps from her. In the anime he also entrusts his younger sister to Sumireko’s care for a few days. Her connection with the siblings therefore develops through shared daily life as well as supernatural cases.
05Versions and visual identity
The selected reference is her original adult everyday design on the 2024 TV anime’s official character page: brown hair gathered at the back with long side sections, short distinctive eyebrows and a mole below her right eye. She wears a green hoodie with pale lining, a dark crew-neck shirt, full blue trousers and white shoes. The illustrations are AI-generated fan art, not official artwork.
06Fan interpretations
Fan interpretation: her rejuvenation can be read as a creator’s longing to return to a time of open possibilities. This reading connects her youthful prize with her later creative difficulties. Another useful detail is the opening bookstore counter. Before the strange events begin, the pair must get through an ordinary shift with too few customers, grounding the mystery in everyday work.
