ABOUT Tohru Honda / 01—0601First appearance and background
Tohru Honda is the protagonist of Fruits Basket, which began serialization in 1998. The 2001 anime and the new anime that began in 2019 adapt different portions of the work and should be considered separately.
02Personality and appeal
She habitually looks after others first, tries to appear cheerful, and hides her grief over losing a loved one. Being kind does not mean she cannot be hurt; her own needs matter too.
03Story journey
After meeting the Sohma family, she encounters the family’s secret and the pain of its individual members. Her growth involves understanding her companions and allowing herself to admit what she does not want to lose.
04Relationships
Yuki Sohma and Kyo Sohma are important companions, Arisa Uotani and Saki Hanajima are close friends, and Kyoko Honda is her late mother. Members of the Sohma family are not presumed to be related to Tohru by blood.
05Versions and visual identity
Her long brown hair, blue hair ribbon, and clear-eyed expression are distinguishing features. A portrait could show her listening attentively, offering encouragement, forcing a smile, or finally relaxing into happiness.
06Fan interpretations
Fan interpretation: Tohru’s gentleness is not a cure-all; she also needs others to make room for her feelings. Noticing when she begins to speak openly about her wishes reveals how their relationships grow in both directions.
